8.1.2.4.3 Narcotics
The human brain controls sensory experiences, as well as conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings, actions, and needs. An area of the brain known as the reward system is responsible for creating feelings of happiness and satisfaction, such as when you eat, drink, or have sex. This system also helps you learn to do things that bring you joy. People often take drugs because they affect the reward system, making them feel happy. Unfortunately, it is this very system that can lead to addiction. Young people are particularly vulnerable to becoming addicted to substances like drugs or food, as they primarily affect the brain and the central nervous system. If a person starts taking drugs at a young age, the body will gradually adjust to the substance. Before long, without even realizing it, they may become addicted, eventually leading to drug dependence.
